Bunker Park is more than just a quality play and recreation area according to Fairfield mayor Frank Carbone. The new park, located in the New Leaf Estate in Bonnyrigg, was officially opened on Friday and caters to the residents of the up to 2000 new homes being built in the area.

But more importantly the new park is part of the infrastructure that makes a community “liveable”.

“Bonnyrigg is going through a transition with more housing being provided in the estate but what is important is the infrastructure be put in place like community centres and parks that makes a community liveable,” Mayor Carbone told the Champion.

“We are working hard to ensure residents and families have access to these facilities regardless of where they live, their age or ability. “We know backyards are getting smaller so it’s important we invest in open spaces where families can come together and enjoy the wide open spaces.”

Bunker Park features a children’s playground, basketball and handball courts and areas to cycle as well as undercover picnic facilities. One of the key features is the vast grass areas which is ideal for sporting games or get-togethers. The park was funded by the NSW Land and Housing Corporation and built by UrbanGrowth NSW under a developer agreement with Fairfield Council.

“Adults can join in being active or leave the children to it and enjoy the open grassed spaces with a book or bring a coffee and share a chat,” Mayor Carbone said.

“The park has been landscaped with mature trees, so there’s plenty of shade. “I encourage residents to bring a picnic blanket and check out the park, which has a challenging playground for the children, a basketball court and a handball and multi-use court.

“Bunker Park gives us the perfect opportunity to get out and about, get some fresh air and be fit and healthy.”The park is located at the corner of Bunker Parade and Palisade Crescent in Bonnyrigg.

Children from Bonnyrigg High and Bonnyrigg Public Schools were the first to test the new handball and basketball courts at the opening.
