One Minto estate

South West Sydney

One Minto is a thriving community in southwest Sydney with diverse and affordable homes, new playgrounds and renewed community pride.

One Minto was the first project in NSW to incorporate public and private housing into a single development.

Our approach created safer streets and public areas and provided 1,150 homes – most of them new and 176 refurbished. Reducing the proportion of public housing from 100% to 30%, we were able to create different lot sizes to allow for more diverse and affordable housing.

Supported with community engagement, this approach is now being replicated successfully across Land and Housing Corporation estates at Bonnyrigg, Airds and Claymore.

Timeline

Project highlights

One Minto was a 1970’s public housing estate. Over time the housing became rundown, and the urban layout proved to exacerbate social problems.

With support of our partner Land and Housing Corporation, our challenge was to revitalise and completely transform the public housing estate at Minto.

We were able to reduce the proportion of public housing from 100% to 30%, improve the road and pedestrian connections, create different lot sizes to allow for more diverse and affordable housing, and provide better streetscapes, parklands and community facilities to support the needs of the Minto community.

This well-planned community offers pedestrian and cycleways, green streetscapes, open space and parklands, community facilities, and public transport. There are a number of existing local schools and childcare centres, and a local shopping centre.

To support a thriving community, Minto offers a range of housing types at different price points, to provide opportunity for households of different sizes, and incomes, to own their own home.

People really feel part of the community at Minto where they can share parklands, playgrounds, and playing fields, and the walkways and cycleways.

We were committed to integrating sustainability into the rejuvenation of One Minto.

To do this we incorporated requirements for energy efficient house designs and applied water sensitive urban design principles to subdivision works to manage water flow, enhance water conservation and minimise pollution.

The scenic views were also highlighted in the redesign of One Minto.

Social benefits outweighed all other considerations for this renewal project. The ‘Working together in Minto’ community engagement and community development initiatives helped enable today’s inclusive, thriving community.

Community development initiatives included a community Coordination Group, a Community Welcome Program provided for all residents, new public parklands and community centre as well as improved connections to existing public transport and services.
