Local students tour White Bay Power Station
In late April, 90 Year 7 students and their teachers from Newtown High School of the Performing Arts visited White Bay Power Station in The Bays Precinct for a geography fieldwork trip. The excursion was organised in partnership with Observatory Hill Environmental Education Centre.
This program supports the Stage 4 Geography Syllabus in the content area of Place and Liveability. Students undertook fieldwork activities as they walked around the Bays Precinct and visited White Bay Power Station to investigate strategies used to enhance the liveability of places, assess the role of government organisations in enhancing liveability, and propose strategies to improve liveability in the White Bay Power Station precinct.
The Bays project team assisted the group with a guided site tour and answered questions about the history of the site, the plans for the proposed development and important considerations in planning for the future of the site such as transport, housing and social infrastructure.
This is the first of a number of planned site visits for Stage 4 geography students.
