Community Resources Hub for Bungarribee

Landcom and Blacktown City Council have received development approval to build a Community Resource Hub in Bunya, the masterplanned community located in the new suburb of Bungarribee.

Council and Landcom have worked together for over five years conducting several focus groups with community organisations to plan the best possible outcome for the new Community Resource Hub.

Camille Abbott, Development Director for Landcom commented, “The Community Resource Hub is specifically designed to benefit the people in the south of Blacktown City. A variety of flexible spaces will be incorporated into the hub to suit a range of activities, some including play group sessions, exercise classes, computer training and cooking lessons for all age demographics.”

“The community will play a pivotal role in helping build the sustainable community hub to give them further ownership. It will be constructed from plantation timber and rice straw bale to minimise its impact on the environment and to reduce its carbon impact.”

“Community Resource Hubs are the modern community centre, residents can meet, interact with each other, learn new skills, access education and health services, share ideas and enjoy life,” Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Alan Pendleton said.

“The Bungarribee Community Resource Hub will become the heart of this young and growing community, and marks the next generation in delivering community services – it’s an important addition to the area.”

The sophisticated hub designed by architect Rod Simpson, has a farm building character to reflect the history of Bungarribee Estate which was a major rural employer and breeding area for Australia’s horse racing industry.

Several schools from the local community have been invited to participate in the design of the public art works for the hub. Projects include decorative metal security screens to be placed on the exterior of the building that reflect the rural nature of the former Bungarribee Estate.

The 800 square metre Community Resource Hub is situated adjacent to the Heritage Park and compliments the rural feel of the area. It includes a large hall, meeting rooms, function rooms for families, a future community garden and commercial kitchen.

Construction is expected to start later this year, with completion due late 2012.
Council and local community groups will run the Community Resource Hub.
