MAKING GREAT PLACES - THE LANDCOM GUIDELINES
Today NSW Minister for Planning, Frank Sartor officially launched Landcom’s set of design and planning guidelines at an industry conference focused on the latest thinking in design and urban development.
The set of seven guidelines aim to provide local government and industry with practical advice and examples of the design of great homes, neighbourhoods and the development of sustainable communities.
Landcom’s Sustainability and Policy Director, Stephen Driscoll said Landcom was building on its reputation as an innovative industry leader in order to provide the key ingredients that go into making good homes, neighbourhoods and communities.
“ As the State Government’s property developer, Landcom has thought carefully about how neighbourhoods work and how the design of places affects the way they are used.”
“ The guidelines were originally developed for our own staff and they are now being made available to development and design professionals for their own application.”
“ Landcom has good relationships with local councils and industry. If we work co-operatively on a shared vision, there is a much better chance of making great places and putting the pieces together correctly,” said Mr Driscoll.
The guidelines include:
• Built form;
• Universal housing;
• Streets;
• Street trees;
• Open spaces;
• Public art;
• Community facilities.
Each guideline has a set of principles that spell out the essence of what makes memorable places and spaces; from how they are built to how they are used and managed.
Mr Driscoll said the guidelines were prepared to further debate and discussion with design and development professionals on the importance of making better communities and places.
“We encourage industry to provide feedback and road-test the guidelines,” said Mr Driscoll.
